The award winning short, Other Islands follows an afternoon on the beach with 9 year-old Penny, her father and Lisa, his much younger girlfriend. With a minimum of dialogue, the story captures shifting family tensions and alliances from the perspective of a girl on the cusp of childhood’s end. The sequel, Deep Water, revisits Penny three years later on a quietly devastating visit with her dad and the very pregnant Lisa, now her stepmother. By using the same actors over time, the two films conjure a snapshot of family life that underscores the challenges of social connections juxtaposed with the enveloping beauty and solace of the natural world.
